How to Dress Like Lorde in ‘Solar Power’

It’s been about 5 years since we’ve heard new beats from Lorde, the indie pop New Zealand artist. Her last album “Melodrama” was released in 2017. But on June 10th, Lorde finally dropped a new single called “Solar Power.”

Laura Snapes, The Guardian’s deputy music editor, suggested that there’s something to be gleaned from this gap: the magic of Lorde’s music is kept alive in this way, with her “sweet, scratchy whisper.” Lorde herself is said to be “a mercurial star who is much imitated but utterly unique.”

Her new song has been described as sonically similar to “Loaded” by Primal Scream and “Freedom! ’90” by George Michael. In the music video, the singer appears in a yellow skirt and top set from a New York brand called Collina Strada. The effect: very summery and radiant.

She even inspired me to wear more yellow this summer!

This set looked amazing on set, but in real life, coordinated sets might seem a little too… royal. And I’d suspect that even Lorde knows better than that: “And we’ll never be royals (royals). It don’t run in our blood. That kind of lux just ain’t for us. We crave a different kind of buzz.”

So what does Lorde wear when she isn’t in music videos? She definitely has an affinity for crop tops! The singer wears them to red carpet events and in more relaxed settings like her hometown of Auckland, New Zealand.

Here is one of Lorde’s classic, laid-back summer looks that everyone can recreate and rock this summer: light blue jeans + crop top + the Adidas Superstar sneakers.

LittlePinkTop is all about helping you to get your style just right. So, here’s a carefully curated, Lorde-inspired outfit that you might like, especially if you have a similar body type to Lorde and a creative personality!

Look #1

Crop top

LittlePinkTop’s pick number one is this little pink top from PrettyLittleThing. I know, it reads almost like a tongue twister but if you are an actor or news anchor, use it as a vocal warmup. If you are more of a fashionista, you’ll see how this piece looks cute and irresistible!

This ditsy floral top will stylistically work in a similar way to the cherry print top that Lorde can be seen wearing in that MTV tweet.

Oh, and that’s ditsy, not the insult ditzy. Cambridge Dictionary, back me up: “ditsy, adjective: printed with an irregular-looking pattern of small flowers or shapes.”

Thanks, Cambridge Dictionary, you make a girl feel smart, not ditzy.

By the way, this crop top’s ruffles will make the bust line visually bigger. Believe it or not, there are websites that I won’t link to that claim to know celebrity body measurements (why yes, it is creepy), and said websites estimate Lorde’s cup size at 34A or 32B. If you’re somewhere around there, this could be the top for you.

And hey, no wonder Lorde peaced out for a few years.

Jeans

Do you find this top to be a cuteness overload? You might not want people to assume you’re a pushover in pink, girly clothes. Well, you could always wear the floral top with light blue jeans from Manhattan-born brand Blank NYC. It’ll help you bring some New York feistiness to the look and balance out the cuteness of the top.

These jeans are actually the perfect blend of pretty and slightly edgy. They are a little torn, a little intentionally faded, but have a more traditional style. They are high-waisted and straight, which means that they won’t attract too much attention to wider hips or squeeze them too much. These jeans look very much like Lorde’s pair.

Superstar sneakers

If you want to feel like a superstar, put on the Adidas Superstar sneakers!

For half a century, people have been crazy about them. Superstars were originally made for basketball players in the ’70s. From basketball courts, they marched off to the streets and became streetwear staples! And now, streetwear enthusiasts are even wearing them with classic suits and dresses. It’s good news because you’ll be able to wear them with almost any outfit, not only this one.

Look #2

Crop top

This yellow top has a stretch bodice, so you don’t need to worry about the fabric pinching or squashing you, an unpleasant feeling, especially in summer. It has balloon sleeves, which again look cute but also make your breasts look bigger. What I like about this top is its Bardot neck, named after French actress and sex symbol Brigitte Bardot, who really popularized this type of neckline in the ’50s.

Jeans

Yellow and blue pair amazingly well together. So, pair the top above with these blue high-waisted jeans, ripped on the knee. At least you won’t feel ripped off if you buy them because these $98, 99% cotton jeans are good quality with an uncomplicated design.

They are slightly wider at the bottom, meaning that you won’t be in trouble with the Gen Z crowd that wants to cancel skinny jeans. And don’t forget your Superstar sneakers!

And there you have it. Two complete summer looks that will help you to channel your own relaxed and radiant side, just like Lorde!
